Christian Economic Ethics: A Study Based on the Neoliberal Traces of Indian Economy and Development

This work from an ethical perspective brings out the issues and economic realities of the Indian context and proposes a Christian model predicated upon the Social Teachings of the Church. The alternative model envisaged is not quite new, but integral and ethical in its nature; this enhanced model would help us to have a Christian understanding of economic growth and to practise a humane economy.

Shinu Uthuppan’s research on ‘Christian Economic Ethics’ is a beacon of the economic gospel for our times, drawing on the values of wealth and wellness of people on the foundation of a communitarian economy of inclusive and integral developmental ethos embedded in the paradigms of oikonomia and vasudhaiv kutumbakam, resplendent on the responsible and relational bonds of human beings in the world of the Lord.

Prof. Dr. Paulachan Kochappilly, CMI

This book fills a hard-felt gap in the sustained treatment of Christian economic ethics from an Indian perspective. Shinu Uthuppan convincingly presents the basic principles, values and structures of an economy that promotes not only financial growth, but also the well-being of humans, our responsibility for the earth and the concerns of inclusive development.

Prof. Dr. Mathew Illathuparampil

Besides giving a critique of the economic development of India during the period of liberalisation, this timely work proposes an alternative framework for a communitarian and integral development of the Indian economy based on the principles of Catholic social thought. It helps to make the presence of the Church meaningful in the public square by entering into a dialogue between the Church and professional economists, political scientists and political leaders.

Dr. Shaji George Kochuthara, CMI
