Description
The book elucidates the Serampore Mission historiography through the lens of social change or conversion. The debate on social change or conversion, particularly in 19th-century Bengal, is a complex, multi-layered issue that intersects politics, caste dynamics, and religion. The Mission understood that all the missionary work, be it for social change or evangelism, needs to bring about a reform in society. They wanted to build a transformed community through enlightenment, which would ultimately lead to conversion. Conversion for the Mission meant turning the people from moral depravation to enlightenment. From faulty socio-religious ideologies to liberative ideologies. Overall, the Mission could not convert their success in social reform into a conversion movement.
