Knowing Our Triune God: A Historical and Global Survey of Development in Trinitarian Theology

Knowing our Triune God sketches the historical development of Trinitarian theology from the New Testament to contemporary global Christianity. Designed as a textbook for university and graduate students, the book covers key developments of Christian thought about the Triune God. The first part sketches the process by which the Church moved from encountering the risen Jesus Christ and experiencing the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to the development of full Trinitarian language at the end of the Fourth Century. The second part explores the way in which Christian theologians after the Fourth Century enriched reflection on the Triune God by developing Trinitarian analogies and working through theological problems. The third part engages current discussions in Trinitarian thought, showing how modern shifts in thinking about the Nature and Attributes of God have contributed to new trajectories in the doctrine of Trinity. This final section explores unique ways in which Trinitarian thought has been developed in new contexts as Christianity has become a truly global religion. The goal of this text is to provide every Christian access to the contours and richness of the Christian doctrine of God.
